Deadgirl (2008) Marcel Sarmiento & Gadi Harel

Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and J.T. (Noah Segan) are a couple of typical high school lads who skip classes one day and end up in the lower levels of an abandoned hospital/medical building. It is there that they come across a girl chained to a trolley, apparently dead. But then she moves. Before you can say "sick and twisted" Rickie has the idea of being able to keep his own little uncomplaining sex slave. But it's not long till the secret is leaked to others and from there, surely, it's only a matter of time before things start to unravel between those involved.

Such a dark and twisted central premise is obviously not for everybody but horror fans looking for something that mixes psychological character exploration and a few visceral thrills should find themselves well catered for by Deadgirl. The main actors are not great (Fernandez does better out of the two leads) but they don't embarrass themselves either, which is fine. Things are clearly not being done on a mega-budget but the movie works well within it's limits and nothing looks overly rushed or ill-executed.

With a constant morbid feel throughout and a slightly different angle on the familiar subject matter, this stands out amongst a whole host of other movies that don't really take any chances. It's thought-provoking, tense and nasty enough to be worth considering if you ever find yourself at a loss for a horror movie viewing one evening.
