Two petty thieves hold up a tobacconist run by mother and daughter in the working class village of Vallaces, Madrid. Between the proprietor's unwillingness to cooperate and the criminal's persistence, this seemingly non-lucrative and commonplace crime escalates into a hostage situation. The village square soon is overrun by hoards of policemen, reporters, protesters, and politicians all trying to weigh in on the crisis.
